Stopping your Dog from Biting

TrainPetDog knows that biting is a very dangerous habit. It often manifests due to one of three causes, striking or abuse of the dog and rough play with the dog are two of them. The third cause is very innocent and is the result of a teething puppy that puts everything in its mouth including fingers and hands. It may not hurt at first, it may even seem cute, but as the puppy grows quickly the biting continues and pain in sues. You can correct this behavior with a few simple tricks.

First of all, you want to let your puppy know that it is not okay to grab, bite, chew or otherwise mouth the human hand, foot, arm, leg, etc. This can be done with a simple, high pitched “ouch.” This is a shock and awe approach that is designed to break the focus of the dog much like that of another littermate that has been played too rough with. You then want to redirect the negative behavior to something positive. Give the puppy or dog something appropriate to play with like a toy.

Remember that aggression begets aggression. If your puppy or dog bites you and you react out of anger, strike or push your canine companion, you may see that same behavior directed towards you. TrainPetDog does not condone hitting of any kind. In fact, TrainPetDog has a free dog training mini course as well as websites that come with and without a membership. The information allows you to arm yourself with the tools necessary to stop your dog from biting.
